Shelflife Artist Tee Series: Lazi Mathebula
Continuing our popular Artist Tee Series in the month of March is none other than Joburg-based artist Lazi Mathebula. Lazi, who goes by the name 'Greiispaces', is an award-winning illustrator and independent designer who believes real creativity involves transforming the ordinary and in a sense, turning realism on its head. His bold illustration style can be found on heaps of items like wallpapers, iPhone and laptop covers, stickers, product labels and now, a Shelflife Artist Tee!

Where did your love for illustration and art in general begin?
My love for art at a very young age, I must have been in Grade 2. My love for illustration began in 2008.
Who are some of your biggest influences?
Some of my biggest influences come from the music I listen to, that’s Traditional South Africa music. The sounds are great for putting me into a creative mood.
What have been some of your highlights as an artist so far?
Everything I work on is a highlight for me, I see my work and projects as equally important to the other.
If you could collaborate with one artist or brand, who would it be and why?
Carhartt would be dope to work with because I love workwear and its utilitarian aesthetics.
How did you interpret the concept of the Shelflife "S" into your artwork?
Being apart of street culture, one knows and is very familiar with the camping out for new drops. Over the years we have witnessed Shelflife attract more and more kids anxiously waiting to get a pair of the latest sneaker. That’s basically where my idea came from, capturing kids outside of their favourite store waiting to for a chance at getting that elusive drop. The 'S' shape comes from a smoker in that queue.
What are your essentials you use to create your work?
Water, iPhone family products; iPhone, AirPods and iPadPro all a 100% charged. (: 
What would an average day for Lazi look like?
There is no typical day, but since becoming a new dad, spending time with my family is a priority. Changing diapers and experiencing my daughter grow is fun. All this while working when she naps.
Any advice to those wanting to get started in the industry and stand out?
Quit over-thinking and get your ideas out. Appreciate that it takes time and hard work to stand out - if that’s your end goal.
