Back to the City Festival 2018
This coming Freedom Day (27 April) sees the return of the extremely popular Back to the City Festival - South Africa’s top Hip Hop event. To celebrate the Joburg festival's 12th annual event, Back to the City have gone all out and will have 3 stages that will host 30 DJs and over 60 artists including international acts. The acts performing contain a mix of underground and well-known artists, with headliners including Cassper Nyovest, Ricky Rick, Young Star CPT, KO, Reason and Okmalumkoolkat. The festival will also be holding MC battles, where artists battle each other to win the Paid in Full title and prize money. Those interested in bands are also catered for, with a bands only stage where the battle of the bands will be held.
Back to the City isn’t only about the music though, it also embraces the other elements of Hip Hop culture like graffiti. And the artists really go wild on the pillars of the M1 bridge in Newton for the graffiti competition. With it being legal by council, graffiti artists have painted the pillars every year during the festival since 2007.
Other activities at the festival include skate parks, breakdancing competitions, basketball courts, freestyle football, stalls and beer gardens, ensuring there is something for everyone. Last year’s Back to the City Festival saw 25 000 attendees and this year is looking to be even bigger, so hurry to grab your tickets for this coming Freedom Day.
