Design Indaba Trust Presents #ANOTHERLIGHTUP in Collaboration with Faith47 and Thingking
Embarking on a journey of community upliftment and social reform, The Design Indaba Trust have launched an 8-month-long project using street art and crowd-funded community engagement as a vehicle for social impact and public space renewal for the Monwabisi Park in the Khayelitsha township.
With the help of local street artist Faith47 and creative agency Thingking, a large wall-side mural, titled ‘The Harvest’, has been erected in the District Six region of Cape Town alongside the De Waal Drive outbound highway. Bearing the central image of the feminine form – a symbol of fertility and abundance – surrounded by the sacred geometry Flower of Life emblem, the multi-story artwork includes an intricate lighting fixture that will illuminate upon receipt of donations for the Monwabisi #ANOTHERLIGHTUP project.
In Monwabisi, communal public spaces are devoid of streetlights, rendering the areas in darkness and rife for crime. The #ANOTHERLIGHTUP project aims to fund the installation of a series of streetlights to brighten a 700m public pathway and create a safer communal space. Each streetlight costs approximately R7000 to install, and the project aims to raise enough funds to erect 80 lights. Each time enough donations are made to secure another streetlight, the mural ‘The Harvest’ will light up at night, sending both messages of thanks, and hope, to the public.
