Get Original Banksy For As Little As R200

Last week Banksy launched his highly anticipated and extremely interesting online store Gross Domestic Product. It features “art, homewares and disappointment” with the artist claiming to have “price fixed the first releases for lower-income patrons.” He's also urged the wealthy to stay away for the first drop altogether.

The products range from simple mugs and spray paint cans, to clocks and the 1/1 stab-proof vest worn by Stormzy. And the prices aren’t actually crazy at all.

With some items costing as little as R175, this would definitely be some of the most accessible original Banksy work in the world. But there’s a catch.

You can't just pay for the item, you have to be awarded the chance for Banksy to take your money. Anyone who wishes to purchase any Banksy products off of his web store must submit an essay on the topic, “Does art matter?” The submissions will then be judged by comedian Adam Bloom, who has also asked people to make their answers as “amusing, informative or enlightening as possible.” Of course, people will still buy to resell, and Banksy knows this. "We can’t ever weed out all the people who just want to flip for profit, but we can weed out the unfunny ones.”

The launch of the webstore, as well as physical store, was actually done by Banksy to secure his trademark. This follows from a legal battle last year with a greeting card company that attempted to seize legal custody of his name to sell branded merchandise.

Check out some of the items available for "purchase" here, as well as the full list on the webstore.
