Single Nike Sneaker Sells for R1,2 Million
Last weekend, the OG Nike Air Mag went on sale through an eBay auction. Originally created in in 1989 for the Back to the Future Part II film, the sneaker became an obsession for sneakerheads and lovers of the film alike.
The sneaker was so popular in fact, that Nike re-released the Nike Air Mag in 2011, and an improved self-lacing version in 2016. While the re-releases of the Nike Air Mag were extremely hard to come by, it’s the OG 1989 Nike Air Mag that’s fetching the highest price. The eBay seller Shoezeum hosted the auction after securing the sneaker from the personal collection of a longtime Nike employee.
The 1989 sneaker, which was designed by Tinker Hatfield and Tiffany Beers, is one of extremely few that were made for the film. A detached outsole, cracked midsole, and crumbling heel show the fragility of the sneaker, but this sneaker is certainly not meant to be worn. 220 bids and $92,100 later, a single sneaker from the 1989 pair is headed to a new owner. More of a relic and collector's item than anything else, the shoe is badly deteriorated due to age, but that didn't stop fans from bidding high in an attempt to get their hands on a living piece of sneaker and Hollywood history.
