PUMA Disc celebrates 25 years
The year was 1990, and while some of you may have been watching Die Hard 2, or listening to Vanilla Ice. PUMA was gearing up to release a brand new silhouette that would shake the sneaker industry as they knew it with The PUMA Disc.
It was Revolutionary technology designed to offer the perfect synthesis of foot and shoe. It was the first ever lace less closure system and PUMA first applied it to their running shoes.
The Disc System was celebrated for its groundbreaking technology. With a turn of the Disc dial, the internal wire system tightened the upper that created a custom fit. The combination of design and function achieved total harmony on this revolutionary system. Athletes and amateurs loved it for its easy-to-use technology and comfort.
The PUMA Disc System consist of these 3 features:
- The Closure Unit – a circular disc is turned and clicked to adjust to the perfect fit
- The pre-molded compression unit replaces the standard tongue and carries the closure unit which adjusts the instep
- The side unit consisting of connecting sleeve and stabilizing elements on the inside and outside the shoe on the mid and read foot all the way to the heel, creating a total foot-shoe contact. The Disc System is released by pressing the quick release button in the centered of the disc.
The combination of the design and function achieved total harmony on this groundbreaking system. Athletes and amateurs loved it for its easy-to-use technology and comfort. The new PUMA Disc has only 5 parts in total. It’s quicker to turn and faster in terms of tightening, and features smooth, durable steel wires that wrap and secure the upper.

The Disc was originally designed for running but it quickly infiltrated other sport arenas like tennis and basketball. While wearing the Disc Spike, Heike Drechsler won the gold medal in the long jump at Barcelona Summer Olympics - 1992
