Pokémon Card Sells for R2.9 Million

It feels like everyone used to collect Pokémon cards, but not many held onto them or kept them in a good enough condition. And as most of you know, collectibles can be big money, especially in mint condition. And their First Edition collectible value was once again shown off recently with the biggest sale of a single Pokémon card - an astonishing R2.9 Million.

Just short of the 3 Mil, the card wasn’t just any old one you’d find while going through your old room. The card was in fact the ultra-rare “Pikachu Illustrator” card illustrated by Atsuko Nishida, with only 39 ever made. They were never sold, but were rather distributed in 1998 to the winners of a CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest for Pokémon. On top of its rarity, the card also received a grade 9 score in terms of its condition, being sold at the New York-based Weiss Auctions.

The card spotlights Pikachu holding a number of paint brushes, and the starter appears to be colouring numerous pocket monsters. But is it worth almost R3 Million?
