adidas Consortium x DOE UltraBOOST 19
adidas Consortium partner DOE first opened their doors in 2014, delivering both striking interiors and a striking product range to the revitalized area of Tong Ren Lu in Shanghai. The store has since become a key hub for bringing the city’s burgeoning streetwear scene together. A second Shanghai store soon followed, and earlier this year DOE undertook the 890-mile trek to the southern city of Shenzen to open their third store. The newest spot draws on traditional East Asian architectural influences and welds them to the distinctively stripped-back, modern-day industrialism that has defined their previous stores.
This inspired blend of old and new also comes to the fore in their new collaboration with adidas Consortium. The team returned to one of the most era-defining running shoes of the 1980s: the adidas Micropacer. While now a decidedly ‘retro’ shoe, instantly recognisable for its metallic silver stylings, at the time its use of computer technology to measure performance also embodied the future-looking design ethos that has continued to define adidas’ advances in the running sector.
The most recent of these advances can be seen in the UltraBOOST 19 running shoe, which features the engineered fit of Primeknit, the incredible energy return of BOOST cushioning and the propulsive support of a Torsion Spring. To this frame, DOE have applied the aesthetics of the OG Micropacer, replacing the cage and lacing system of the regular UltraBOOST 19 with a stretchable neoprene strap that emulates the look of the original Micropacer laceover.
The final homage comes in the flash of the metallic silver colourway, punctuated by touches of bright red and blue on key functional parts of the shoe. The result is a shoe that captures a sense of the future, as imagined in the past and executed in the present. For this special release, adidas also filmed an episode of SHPTLKS, looking at the inspiration behind the release and giving one further insight into the store.
The adidas Consortium x DOE UltraBOOST 19 drops 21 November exclusively to Shelflife CPT and JHB stores for the retail price of R3499.00
