The 2009 South African Sci-fi film District 9 with Wikus and those "fokken prawns" is getting a sequel!
Set to be titled 'District 10', the highly anticipated sequel has been hinted at by director Neill Blomkamp for some time now. After filming District 9, Blomkamp went on to direct Elysium and Chappie, while still expressing interest in expanding the story of District 9.
Now it's official with Neill reassuring fans - "It's Coming". No time frame has been set yet but Blomkamp noted that he's working on a script with screenwriter Terri Tatchell and actor Sharlto Copley (who played Wikus).
For those unaware of the original. Earning a total of $210 million USD worldwide and four Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects and Best Film Editing, District 9 was based on Blomkamp’s 2006 short film Alive in Joburg. Informed by his time growing up in South Africa, the film deals with heavy themes of humanity, xenophobia and social segregation through the lens of science fiction action.
