Featured Designer 003: Bullyboy

Bullyboy started towards the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 as a holiday project. I was searching online for a new skateboard, particularly a graphic skateboard grip tape, but found that the market was saturated with superhero-themed designs mainly targeted at kids. Unsatisfied with the options, I decided to create my own graphic grip tapes. I made a few designs and thought it would be fun to try and sell them at local skate stores. The grip tapes were received incredibly well within the skate community, and from there, Bullyboy was born.” - Francesco, Bullyboy founder.

It's hard to imagine streetwear without thinking about the graphic tees and baggy jeans of skateboarding. A fairly new but very beloved brand that truly understands the way skating and culture interact is Bullyboy, who we are proud to welcome in to our Featured Designer booth later this week. As our third Featured designer landing in-store, Bullyboy is a brand that stands for everything we believe in - challenging the norms and stereotypes of skating and street culture by pushing boundaries and redefining what’s considered acceptable or expected.

ABOUT THE BRAND:

The name "Bullyboy" was chosen to convey a balance between something rough and aggressive while also having a cute, approachable undertone. Literally, a "bullyboy" can mean an aggressive person, but the name feels endearing and memorable. The Bullyboy grip tapes are very rough and grippy, which complements the "bully" aspect. However, having graphic grip tapes is often looked down upon in traditional skate communities as being somewhat childish. This contrast perfectly reflects our brand philosophy: "Escape the Ordinary."

“When Bullyboy first launched, our idea was aimed at young South African skaters who were comfortable being themselves and expressing who they are without fear. As we’ve grown, Bullyboy has evolved into a skate and streetwear brand. We resonate with those who are tired the rigid rules and stereotypes that have developed in street culture over time. We appeal to those who want to challenge the norm and feel appreciated for being a little different.” - Francesco.

Bullyboy draws inspiration from all walks of life. Their slogan, "Escape The Ordinary," drives them to look at traditional street culture and then add their own twist to make it uniquely ‘Bullyboy.’ One way the brand strays from the norm is through their campaigns where they use wheat pasting posters placed around town—a method not often seen in South African street art, which is typically dominated by spray-painted graffiti. Their socials continue on the community foundation of the brand, where they share “content that has real sauce.” Steering away from the typical skate accounts that showcase the most insane tricks, Bullyboy focuses on presenting content in a way that aligns with their foundation with funny video and interesting designs.
