Future Frequency Returns
Future Frequency is back! Known as SA's avant-garde electronic music festival from the future, Future Frequency returns from its hiatus to once again push the boundaries of how we think about electronic music. The urban festival curates hi-tech music in low-tech settings to draw a contrast between the sounds of tomorrow and the aesthetics of the present.
We caught up with one of the festival founders, Wesley Billet, to ask him all things FFF for the return of the Future Frequency Festival on 10 December 2022. We've also added an exclusive playlist on our Spotify curated by everyone on this year's line-up for a taste of things to come in a weeks time!
Tell us the reason for starting FFF?
We started Future Frequency Festival because we felt that South Africa was missing an inner-city electronic music festival that pushed the boundaries of pairing world-renowned electronic artists with interesting urban spaces. We like to think of Future Frequency as a juxtaposition between the sounds of tomorrow against a backdrop of the raw industrial spaces of the present.
What has FFF become now?
We would say it’s started to instil itself as an institution dedicated to pushing the boundaries of both electronic music and the spaces we listen to it in.
What differentiates it from other festivals?
We would say that potentially the lineups but more so the spaces we manage to curate the lineups in.
Who would be your ultimate dream booking/s?
Too many to mention. The Rand exchange rate makes our dreams difficult to achieve though.
Tell us something we don't know about FFF.
Probably the insane amount of work that goes into securing the types of venues we use. From functioning container depots to hosting a festival under the N2 highway bridge, it’s a lot of work for our team.
What are you looking forward to most for this year’s lineup?
We’re very much looking forward to having Danny Daze back, his 2019 set on our second dancefloor is still the most talked about FFF set in our history and we can confirm it was as good as the hype. We’re excited to see what he will do on the main stage. Then to have Etapp Kyle joining us for the first time is going to be super special too.
Tell us a bit more about the new venue for 2022?
We’ve always wanted to throw a rave under a massive highway bridge and this year we’re finally making it happen!
Any plans on expanding to other cities?
We’ve hosted a festival in Johannesburg and definitely plan on returning sometime in the near future.
Highlight booking over the years?
We would have to say Roman Flugel, Danny Daze, Matrixxman and Charlotte De Witte have been our favourite bookings to date.
What does the future hold for FFF?
More music in interesting spaces. May the journey continue!
Future Frequency takes place Saturday 10 December at the Convention Square, 1 Lower Long Street, Cape Town, 8001.
