Going BROKE: Right Now with Andile Dlamini
For the uninitiated, the South African fashion collective, BROKE, is more like a brotherhood than a commercial operation. Bowling shirts, graphic hoodies, and caps may be the products, but the brand’s inspiration and passion are more profound than the garments. As one of BROKE's founders (along with cousin Sindiso and friend Mzwandile), Andile Dlamini is also BROKE’s creative director and head of design, steering the brand’s cross-cultural ship.
Ahead of the launch of BROKE Klubhouse, the brand's much-needed reintroduction into inner-city nightlife, we caught up with the tastemaker and curator in the latest 'Right Now' instalment.
TS: What can we expect from the BROKE Klubhouse for those unfamiliar with its original incarnation?
AD: Klubhouse is a concept; it's a community and a tribe of homies and like-minded people who come together to create and share memories. You can expect a vibrant and energetic atmosphere, exhilarating DJ performances and an unforgettable nightlife experience. Everyone is welcome; the diverse mix creates a dynamic and inclusive atmosphere.
TS: What's the best part about throwing events?
AD: The best part about us [BROKE Boys] hosting events is seeing a white person dance to Amapiano. Lol, just kidding… For us, the best part is seeing our community together in harmony, enjoying each other's energy and expressing creativity while creating unforgettable experiences. Last but not least, the best part of hosting events is when the event is over, me and the boys are all just chilling, taking it all in after successfully curating yet another epic experience.
TS: What grails are you on the hunt for right now?
AD: I am always looking for something new that has yet to be seen. At the moment, I'm looking for a pair of Nike x Supreme Humara. I also missed the recent Wales Bonner x Adidas Samba drop, so I'm trying to get my hands on any out there… Definitely trying to get the latest Stüssy x Levi's Trucker too!
TS: What was the last piece you thrifted?
AD: The last thing I thrifted was a pair of Nike Zoom Vomero 5 'Anthracite' from @yams_archive.
TS: What is your go-to winter accessory right now?
AD: My go-to winter accessory has to be my Arc'teryx x Carhartt beanie.
TS: Do you have anything that you would never part ways with?
AD: All my pieces are dear to me, but I don't see myself parting ways with any of my headwear or shoe collection... I recently had my favourite pieces stolen, my Northface puffer and my Arc'teryx Beta LT jacket, which really put me down; I'm still recovering.
TS: What are you watching right now?
AD: I am currently watching Silo, The Bear, and Platonic. When I don't feel like anything too serious, I rewatch Seinfeld and Friends every chance I get.
TS: What are you listening to on repeat right now?
AD: I recently bought my dream car (BMW 318i), so I spend my days reliving my childhood memories as a ghetto superhero, which means a lot of Kwaito, like Brown Dash & Mzekezeke
TS: Where do you get your inspiration from?
AD: My inspiration comes from day-to-day, real-life experiences. Apart from that, I'm inspired by old music videos, movies and sitcoms… and also when thrifting.
Broke Klubhouse is set to open its doors on the 26th of August 2023!
