Loyiso Gola's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Playlist for Shelflife Sound
Our friend Loyiso Gola is a very discerning character. He's not only a comedian, sneaker collector, football fanatic and fashion connoisseur but his love and depth of knowledge about the things he follows are exactly how we resonate too. He created an exclusive playlist for our SL Sound Spotify taking us on a journey through his early years listening to rap music.
'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Playlist
"Rap was everything to me as a teenager. The energy, the violence, the glorified (and many times ) encouraged disfunction, immature ideas on pair bonding and the false confidence that assuages your insecurities. The genre guides you through your misguided years. Not through redressing but by making dumb shit seem cool (that's not good supervision).
As a teen you have a license to act a fool and society understands you are susceptible to pop culture. YOU ARE KNUCKLEHEAD. Drake’s “No New Friends” is a great song but horrible advice.
By your late 20s you better snap out of that shit. This is hard because hip hop is constantly being marketed as a young man's sport and will always connect with your teen spirit.
This playlist sonically represents my juvenile era. Except now I am not impressed by who you shot or how many kilos you sold. I am impressed by the concepts musically."
