Medicom Bearbricks - Toys for Grownups
The value of art in society is longstanding. It is a way for people to reinforce their identity, gives life to self-expression, offers insight into its surrounding society, holds a level of exclusivity and excitement, and can connect likeminded people in a beautiful and unique way. It is obvious then, that streetwear and its surrounding community is an important form of art in our present day. Fashion and sneaker culture has become so significant as it allows for the meaningful aspect of art, to be reimagined in an accessible way that is reminiscent of childhood fun with its playful colours and silhouettes that have no constraints. Bearbrick (rendered Be@rbrick) creator Tatsuhiko Akashi, drew on his love for toys and the playful innocence that it evokes, merging it together with art and street culture, to create these iconic figurines.
It is no surprise then, that Bearbrick collectables have become a valuable part of the streetwear sphere as it is allows for us to experience the youthful enjoyment of getting a new toy that no one else has, in a way that feels meaningful and nostalgic. Getting your hands on the bear-shaped toys evokes the same feeling as waiting in-line for hours in the hopes of securing a new hype sneaker, which is part of the “addictive” appeal of sneaker collecting. Thus, these unique and sought-after pieces, produced by Japanese toy company Medicom Toy, have become a staple in the world of fashion. The figures come in various designs and sizes, ranging from 50% to 1000%. Just as in the world of streetwear, one of the pull-factors is its collabs with such a wide variety of brands, artists and companies, that it dips its influence in almost any cultural group. Collabs range from Stussy and Chanel, to contemporary artists like Daniel Arsham, and even award-winning series Breaking Bad. Due to the unique and complex nature of the toys and the feelings that it invokes, it is unsurprising that the Bearbrick community would become one that mirrors avid sneakerheads who aim to grow their collection, secure the rarest items, and be a part of a greater collective.
Amongst the hype and sought-after collabs is the "Astro Boy Sleeping" Bearbrick, based on the classic anime character and giving a nod to the toys Japanese heritage. This Bearbrick was a huge success, with the toy selling out almost immediately upon release due to the childhood significance it holds for many. The "Stash" Bearbrick is another highly valuable collectible among both toy and streetwear followers, with some versions of the toy selling for thousands of dollars on the resale market. This collaboration with the New York-based graffiti artist Stash features bright blue and pink designs that are reminiscent of Stash's famous all-over cap print, with his signature on the back of the head. The attention to detail, unique designs, and often unexpected link-ups, have and will continue to be popular amongst collectors.
One of the most well-known and arguably coolest collector of Bearbrick toys, is Korean-American jewellery designer, Ben Baller, who has made a name for himself in the streetwear and fashion industry particularly through his million dollar toy collection. Baller's love for Bearbrick began when he was introduced to them almost two decades ago, and has amassed an impressive collection all-showcased from floor to ceiling in a room dedicated to the Medicom bears.
Baller’s position as Bearbrick-royalty was secured with his collaboration with Medicom on several limited-edition releases. One of his most notable collaborations was with Louis Vuitton, in which he designed a special Bearbrick figure that was sold exclusively at the brand's pop-up stores. His love for the figurines has also been reflected in his jewellery designs with pieces inspired by the toys having been designed and encrusted in diamonds. Baller’s collection forms part of his fun-loving, authentic and free-thinking identity, with almost every bear holding deeper significance and aiding in him developing connections beyond himself.
It is clear that Bearbrick has become a symbol of streetwear, with enthusiasts around the world constantly seeking out the latest releases and collabs. In a world that oftentimes feels very overwhelming and serious, being able to experience childhood happiness will always hold importance and keep us connected to who we are and how we came to be. Just as the world of fashion has continued to evolve, change, and allow us the freedom to express ourselves in a way that feels freeing, Bearbrick will do the same as more than just a toy, but as a piece of art that connects us to our youth.
