New Balance 8040

Following the hype around the New Balance 1906L loafers, the brand is back with another game-changer- the New Balance 8040. Nearly two years after the 9060's debut, it has firmly established itself as a fan favourite, sitting comfortably alongside the New Balance 550 and 1906R. Now, with the 8040, New Balance is once again pushing the envelope, combining its signature elements with fresh design to bring a mule-like silhouette.

One of the most striking elements of the New Balance 8040 is its use of the chunky, blocky sole unit similar to the 9060. This 1-to-1 graft of the 9060’s sole brings a sense of familiarity to the new model, with this type of exaggerated look becoming a hallmark of the brand. Howvever, where the New Balance 8040 really stands out is in its connection to an outdoorsy, comfort-focused aesthetic. While the brand has made its mark in both athletic and lifestyle categories, the 8040 marks a shift towards a more rugged, outdoor-focused form of footwear.

The upper design of the 8040 is what truly sets this shoe apart from anything New Balance has done before. It’s an entirely new direction, blending elements of a moccasin, a loafer, and a futuristic slip-on. Reminiscent of the Oakley slip-ons like the Flesh, the 8040 is in a category of its own with its layered suede panels and rustic yet sartorial look. Traditional laces are swapped out for a unique velcor closure system while the collar's snug fit ensures comfort and security.

So far, we’ve seen three colourways for the 8040: two monochromatic versions in navy and brown, as well as a striking two-tone option that pairs tan and black. The muted tones and minimalist approach allow the intricate details and exploratory design to truly shine.

The New Balance 8040 in tan & black is dropping on the 27th of September 2024.
