Michael Jordan has always made bold moves on the court, and this is not limited to his basketball skills. For his 1988 game against the Knicks (the same year the new Air Jordan 3 was released), MJ opted to step out in a pair of the Nike Air Alpha Force 88 ‘University Red’ sneakers. The already buzzing crowed went crazy, not only because of the game but to see this silhouette for the very first time.

In the world of sneakers, few brands can rival the innovation that Nike brings to the table, even when they’re taking cues from their archive. This year, Nike has been bringing back some of its most iconic ‘80s sneakers from John McEnroe’s Mac Attack to the legendary Air Jordan 4 “Military Blue’s,” which is set to re-release soon. With each new drop, Nike manages to draw in everyone- from sneakerheads, to those who appreciate sports heritage, to people who just like cool stuff. Thirty-five years on, in celebration of the iconic debut of the Nike Air Alpha Force 88, it is only right that this sneaker gets a spot in the limelight.

This revamped version of the ’88 classic, pays homage to the past while continually innovating. The sneaker sees the distinctive high-top silhouette of a basketball shoe, complemented by bold overlays and a striking University Red colour scheme. The shoe's upper is crafted with a combination of premium leather and subtle materials detailing on the heel.

The Alpha 88 sits atop the same chunky Air midsole of the original shoe, and is finished off with its signature Velcro-fastened strap which wraps around the front of the upper. Finally, strategically placed Air units and air cushioning helps reduces impact and offers increased comfort.

While this Air Alpha Force 88 offers a glimpse into the future of Nike, it also pays tribute to its rich history. The iconic "Nike Air" branding on the tongue and heel instantly transports wearers back to the OG design.
