Hillbrow to Soweto, uptown Rosebank to downtown Jozi, the people of this city is my community.”
@Wanda Lephoto

Fashion designer, tastemaker and creative entrepreneur Wanda Lephoto finds his unique identity in the many pockets of culture that make up the city of Johannesburg. From his family apartment in Berea, where Wanda grew up, to the street stalls of Soweto and the high rises in Rosebank, Wanda draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of culture and colourful stories.

“All the parts that make up the whole of the city is who I am and what I represent.”

Wanda weaves the city together with his garments, art and design, showing the future generation that creativity overcomes any barrier and brings people together.

As much as creativity saved me, community made me. That's why I feel an obligation to be an uncle, a friend and a collaborator to those I see coming next.”

@Anthony Bila

Award winning photographer, and all round creative force, Anthony Bila took us back to where it began for him as a young kid growing up in his Gran’s house in Tembisa.

“Tembisa wasn't always a safe place but I found safety in my creativity and community, it kept me occupied and inspired”

From learning to draw from his uncle to snapping his first pics on a borrowed cameraAnthony’s familyandthose around him was instrumental in shaping him to be who he is today. And Anthony plans on using his creativity to help the next generation of image makers to be whoever they want.

This is the place where I first touched the decks. Now I am here to give the next in line the same opportunities I had.”
@DBN GOGO

DJ and entrepreneur DBN Gogo uses her music to bring people together. She describes her sound as more than a genre, “a culture, way of life and livelihood, rooted in uniqueness and inclusivity.”

From the decks in Moloko where she first got her break, to the world stage, she is leading the charge in carving out a unique identity for local music.

But for her it doesn’t just stop there; under her guidance as mentor she is giving young musicians the opportunity to use music to change perceptions, break barriers and unite people.
