'Nike Refurbished' - A Nike Store That Resells Worn Pairs
Nike has recently given the world more details about a new range of stores called 'Nike Refurbished'. As part of the brand's efforts to 'Move to Zero' (reduce its carbon footprint), the new store will take your worn shoes, either to be restored and sold on the shelves or recycled into Nike Grind materials for future pairs. Unfortunately, this is just set for America at present (with 15 locations confirmed), but no doubt a global expansion is planned if Nike wants to make a real change to their carbon footprint around the world.
A Second Life For Footwear
After a shopper returns a pair of shoes to Nike within a 60-day return window, eligible footwear is added to the Nike Refurbished lineup. Each pair is inspected and refurbished by hand, and then given a condition grade. The team uses a number of different products and tools to return shoes to as close to new condition as possible. Once the shoes land back in a Nike store, the price is based on footwear type and condition grade. Handy messaging on the boxes make it easy to see what kind of shoes are inside, the condition grade, and more. With a simple scan of the box’s QR code, customers can check out even more information about Nike Move to Zero.
Give It Back Or Grind It Up
Returned product that doesn’t make it to Nike Refurbished still has a chance at a second life, too. Nike works closely with their community partner to donate gently worn footwear. Or, if it's truly at the end of wearable use, Nike recycles it into their proprietary Nike Grind. When the time has come to say goodbye to a pair of Nike Refurbished shoes, customers can do their part to help keep them out of landfills by choosing to donate or responsibly recycle their Nike Refurbished shoes.
Let's hope 'Nike Refurbished' will hit South Africa soon for people who just want to wear their kicks! See some behind-the-scenes videos on Nike's Blog right now!
