Ray Barbee x Leica x Vault by Vans
With a shared commitment to craftmanship, Vault by Vans partners with Leica Camera and Ray Barbee to introduce a footwear and apparel collection inspired by Ray Barbee’s love for skateboarding and photography.
Born in San Jose, California in 1971, Ray Barbee was one of the first skateboarders to bring freestyle, flat ground tricks to the street and turned pro in 1989, just six years after he started skating. Ray was always surrounded by gifted skateboard photographers and got the chance to see their work up close. Inspired by what they accomplished in capturing the movement and energy of his sport, he was driven to shoot his own photos and get into the darkroom making richly shaded silver gelatin prints.
Surrounded by photographers in the ’80s and ’90s while skateboarding, Ray Barbee was inspired by the way photographers were able to capture the movement and energy of skateboarding. Shortly after, he started shooting his own photos and spent time in the darkroom making richly shaded gelatin prints.
The footwear and apparel collection is a nod to Ray’s experiences with his beloved Leica camera, with each footwear style featuring a special quote, while the Leica Camera logo is reinterpreted with minimalistic red design details throughout. The collection includes Old Skool, Slip-Ons and Authentic models, as well as apparel including hoodies, long-sleeves and a jacket. The Vault by Vans × Leica Camera by Ray Barbee collection drops Friday 14 January in-store and online.
