Restaurant of the week: LOCO

Say hola to LOCO, Braamfontein’s newest Mexican locale!

Known for its eclectic mix of art, culture and culinary delights, Braamfontein is a vibrant neighbourhood in the heart of Johannesburg – and now home to new Mexican eatery, LOCO. No stranger to the suburb, LOCO’s owner, Adam Levy, is also the founder of Play Braamfontein. LOCO, an extension of Adam’s commitment to the area – a location that he believes has incredible potential and one where he is enthused to bring the creative community together – is an inviting space.

Modern and minimalist pink interiors set the scene for a sensory dining experience that is cosy and intimate. LOCO goes beyond traditional dining by offering a unique co-working space too. The restaurant recognises the need for a versatile environment that caters to both work and play, so whether you're seeking a productive space for meetings, a creative corner to immerse yourself in your passion projects or the perfect spot to enjoy authentic Mexican food with friends, LOCO is the ideal setting (with a side of artisanal tequila, of course).

At the helm of LOCO's kitchen is talented chef, Minenhle Manzini, whose passion and creativity shine through in every dish. She’s meticulously curated a menu that tantalises the taste buds with every bite – and one that will leave a lasting impression. Through her innovative approach and deep appreciation of Mexican cuisine, chef Minenhle ensures that each of LOCO’s dishes is a culinary delight.

When it comes to the most popular meal at LOCO it is unequivocally the Chicken Tacos – the succulent, overnight-marinated chicken bursts with flavour and is paired with a zesty Pico de Gallo (a more-is-more salsa), all encased in freshly made corn tortillas. But if we’re being honest, LOCO's menu boasts several honourable mentions. The Mexi in the Hole – a fusion of Mexican and New York influences – is a toasted bagel topped (generously) with cream cheese, spicy chipotle relish, fresh avocado, and a perfectly fried egg. The Burrito Verde entices diners with Mexican green rice, spicy beans, roasted sweet carrots, and a moreish chipotle vinaigrette. And, for those into a little more spice, the Spicy Corn is it, trust us! LOCO also caters to vegetarian diners with a range of options that highlight the versatility of plant-based ingredients.

But your dining experience is not complete without indulging in the Churros… c’mon! Golden sticks of fried dough that are perfectly crispy on the outside and delightfully fluffy on the inside, served with a side of semi-dark chocolate and salted dulce de leche for dipping – yes, please! They’re the necessary sweet and satisfying conclusion to your meal!

Many would also argue that no Mexican dining experience is complete without a sip (or two) of tequila, and LOCO has gone above and beyond to curate an exceptional selection of artisanal tequilas to choose from – the perfect complement to the authentic Mexican dishes on offer.

Play Braamfontein has spent years successfully redeveloping commercial, retail and residential spaces in the area, and with the addition of LOCO (and more exciting projects to follow) the group continues to enhance the neighbourhood’s creative and cultural offerings by fostering a strong sense of community and providing platforms for local talent to engage and showcase their work. What’s not to love?
