Shelflife Sound 012: Gonubie
Vertigo Festival kicks off this coming weekend as the first audiovisual festival of its kind in South Africa, celebrating music and art through immersive performances and exhibitions. In anticipation of Vertigo, we teamed up with Gonubie aka raresoftware, to bring you a glimpse into her experimental live-set that we are super excited to see this weekend, alongside a line-up of 16 other DJ's, 7 live performances, and 16 visual artists.
From percussive techno and breakbeat to house, Gonubie aka raresoftware explores genres across the field of dance music, seeking to immerse the crowd in an experience inspiring joy and dance outside of the dailies of this world, yet within it. Being from Cape Town [born and raised], she has played at spaces across the city since 2017, at parties and spaces such as Modular and
Movida, and has shared music at local music festivals including Future Frequency and Search Festival.
In addition to sharing music with crowds, she has explored intersections of genres from downtempo to ambient on her monthly radio show ‘Section Line(s)’ on the Other Radio in 2023. Her interdisciplinary and multi-genre interest extends to the music she makes - exploring ambient and fourth world sound under her moniker, Gonubie. In 2023, she celebrated the debut release of her album ‘Signals at Both Ears’ on Small Measures, the sub-label of UK-based Metron Records.
Outside of the tributaries of music [yet linked to it], raresoftware, has a degree in Fine Art, landscape architecture and has just completed a Master of Urban Design, informing inspiration for the ability of sound to subtly transform space and carry memory (along with the need for release through dance).
