MOM or Mother of Music is Spotify’s four-day event dedicated to music, art and culture in Cape Town, so when MOM calls, you answer! Alongside streetwear, supporting and spotlighting local and emerging artists has been an integral part of Shelflife, and we are super excited to be involved in this incredible celebration of culture in all its forms. With MOM being a true display of our cities rich and diverse musical and artistic heritage, it only made sense for the event to span from the CBD to Khayelitsha, proving that MOM goes beyond music and art but is also about building a community.

Today, Spotify ignites the Mother City with the launch of MOM: Mother of Music. A four-day event, from September 5th to 8th, will immerse attendees in the African Renaissance, spotlighting emerging sounds, art, and culture in Cape Town as South Africa’s creative heartbeat.
As part of the “MOM: Mother of Music” celebrations, a dedicated playlist has been unveiled, curating a
collection of tracks that celebrate Cape Town’s diverse and dynamic sounds. This sonic journey is a
testament to Cape Town’s rich musical heritage and its role in nurturing global music stars. A microsite has
also been launched, offering free registration to all music enthusiasts, journalists, influencers, the wider
music industry, the young music lovers and the general public wishing to attend the planned experiential
events.
“Cape Town is a melting pot of musical innovation, a place where new sounds and artists are constantly
being discovered,” says Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu. “MOM: Mother of
Music is our tribute to this vibrant culture and a platform for unearthing new talents and fostering a
community around them.”
A dynamic lineup of events awaits participants that will be attending the “MOM: Mother of Music events. On
the first day, themed “MOM First Thursdays”, in recognition that First Thursdays have been a staple for
Cape Town arts and culture, MOM will partner with various communities, venues and events to add the Spotify touch through music, platforming and collaboration. There will be a MOM Playlist Party launch party and a MOM After party among other activities lined up.
Day Two offers three exciting events: a 90s inspired RAVE, an ISYAADT party at Texas hosted by
KDOLLAHZ and friends and a collaboration with the Strictly Soul Community of Cape Town to bring you a
live edition featuring the rising R&B and Neo-Soul singer Hunter Rose and rapper vocalist, Kash CPT.
Day Three, on Saturday, music lovers will be thrilled to an outdoor performance in the evening with live
performances at Woodhead Parking and a second DJ stage at TEXAS with sounds from the 4 The Khaltsha
Showcase by Dee Koala, HONEYMOAN, Kay Faith, Ziggy4x, and SPINALL. On the same day, MOM will also
welcome music fans to TEXAS for a family-friendly gathering with biltong and a live stream of the Bokke
game. It will be time for the MOM’s Rugby Watch Party.
Finally, the weekend program concludes at the Khayelitsha way with a Sunday turnup and silent disco
stage at RANDS Club featuring DJ Abu.
MOM: Mother of Music offers a mix of free and ticketed events. For events requiring tickets, a randomized allocation system will be used, with tickets released in batches. Registered attendees should check their email daily for ticket notifications.
