Stay True Sounds x Shelflife Collab
2024 is another big one for Shelflife – with 18 years under our belt, so much has changed but the core ideals remain. A major thing that will always be front and centre for us is collaboration, working on the things we love, and championing the culture. With our main collab of 2024, we ticked all these boxes by finally locking things down with our friends at Stay True Sounds.
We are lucky to call the label one of Shelflife’s long-time partners, with a shared love and deep respect for music and community, official collaboration was always a natural step. It was also a dream come true to enlist the services of one of underground cultures finest artists, and a true favourite of both brands – Ashes57.
The Stay True Sounds x Shelflife collab focusses on art, fashion and music through the collection, campaign and launch events.
The collab will kick off at the Shelflife Store in Cape Town with the early release of the apparel and accessory launch. The event at our Cafe is open to all as an insiders' celebration of friends, family and connection, space is limited. This is just a pre-game for the massive party in Lido Bar at Modular, which kicks off at 10pm with sets from Atmos Blaq, Beatsbyhand, Sio and Stay True’s label boss, Kid Fonque.
Modular’s reputation precedes them, championing Cape Town electronic dance culture and hosting some of the city’s best techno parties with international artists like DVS1 and Dasha Rush, so Lido Bar was the natural choice to gravitate after. (see ticket sale information below)

CAPSULE COLLECTION
One of the key features of this collab is the Stay True Sounds x Shelflife capsule collection of apparel and accessories. The collection sees Ashes57 iconic landscape designs as the launchpad for some of our favourite local landmarks, complete with ‘The Spaceman’ holding a South African flag, gusheshe’s and local wildlife.
STAY TRUE SOUNDS
“Over the past eight years, three words have come to dominate any conversation about South African electronic music: Stay True Sounds.” Stay True Sounds was founded by Kid Fonque after his time at Soul Candi Records. Originally motivated by a desire to champion local underground talent, Stay True Sounds has become a cultural force in the South African house music scene. Kid Fonque, whose early DJing experiences and passion for unique music fueled his career, built the label around authenticity and creativity. Since its founding, Stay True Sounds has shaped the careers of artists like FKA Mash, Dwson, and Sio, and has grown into a "holy grail" for house music lovers.
Stay True Sounds and Kid Fonque have always been close to our hearts at Shelflife with our first ever SL Sound mix compiled by Kid Fonque. With Kid being a constant feature in our ecosystem for more than a decade, partnering with Stay True is a tremendous privilege for us.
ASHES57
Ashes57 is an illustrator, painter and photographer whose work has provided some of the most iconic images of the underground bass music scene from the early days of dubstep through to footwork and beyond. Collaboration with fellow artists and musicians has been an enduring source of inspiration for Ashes57, and we are honoured to be added to her catalogue with this partnership.
From the flyers and posters she produced for the legendary Dub War parties in New York to record covers for labels including DMZ, Swamp 81 and Hyperdub. Her illustrations, design work and photography have provided the visual foil to many of the most exciting moments in electronic music of recent years, including the artwork for the Wu-Tang Clan’s 2009 album and the videos for three DJ Rashad tracks.
A distinctive visual style links her illustration, painting and print work - images which are dense and detailed with fine and intricate lines. Her work often includes complex cityscapes with occasional bursts of colour, and are oftentimes a playground for a revolving cast of DJs, musicians and revellers, such as her iconic Spaceman.
