The History of HOKA
It’s true that everything Hoka One One does is crafted masterfully. Whether it be the “about us” section of their website which unfolds like an alluring poem or their viewpoint of running being more than just running. All of this compounded together to fulfill their vision of creating remarkable and world-class sneakers.
HOKA is a French brand, founded in 2009 by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard to create a distinctive, chunky-soled sneakers- revolutionising the way people think about comfort and performance in their footwear. It is no surprise that Nicolas and Jean-Luc had previously worked with outdoor brand Salomon, with their clear expertise into this world of shoes.
The duo's vision was to create a shoe that provided maximal cushioning and support while maintaining a lightweight feel. The name "Hoka One One" is derived from the Maori language and roughly translates to "fly over the earth." True to their name, HOKA sneakers are designed to help you glide effortlessly through your daily activities.
HOKA is celebrated for its innovative technology, which has made its sneakers a top choice for “pro runners and first milers, ultra-marathoners and mountain roamers, neighborhood walkers and wild trail runners,” or people who just want a cool sneaker. The brand’s easily recognizable design, irrespective of the silhouette, can be credited to their “marshmallow” midsoles and unique curved sole shape known as the Meta-Rocker.
Despite the various performance needs that each silhouette meets, it’s fair to say that each design also comes with a unique style ideal to add some fun elevation (literally) to you sneaker rotation. The bold colourways and mixed-materials of each sneaker is truly unique to the brand and keeps the “magic of movement” alive. Whether, it be the Bondi, Speedgoat, Rincon, or our personal favourites, the Clifton and Mafate Speed, the HOKA is an all-round goated sneaker.
HOKA is redefining the world of athletic footwear, and it's easy to see why they've gained such a dedicated following. They’ve created a one-of-one design all while staying true to their beginnings where everything they do is rooted in optimism.
